Pearl Junior Golf Open on OC16!

If you want to see some of the best Oahu junior golfers, you'll want to check out our coverage of the 2008 OJGA Pearl Open.

This is "the" major golf tournament on Oahu for juniors and the age range is from 7-years-old up to 18.

To get into this event, 120 golfers had to pass a playing abilities test as well as a rules test.

The two day tournament will be condensed into a 30-minute hilight show that will feature interviews with age division winners and key officials. It's the first time we've covered this major.

Here's the TV schedule:
Wed 7/30 6:30 pm
Thu 7/31 12:30 am & 4pm
Sat 8/2 2 pm
Sun 8/3 10:30 pm
Mon 8/4 10 am
Tue 8/5 4:30 pm

Just so you know, some good golfers have come through the Oahu Junior Golf Association. Big names right now - PGA tour players - Dean Wilson and Parker McLachlin.

Another fun fact of this group and their tournaments - no parents are allowed to follow their kids! That keeps outside coaching to a minimum and allows the players to think and play for themselves. Not to mention the players have to "police" themselves with rules. I think all together that's great for developing self-confidence and responsibility.

I hope you check out these great young golfers. They play the game the right way.

Some Smiles

It's been a tough few months...

Especially with baseball coaches and good guys - Jim Seki and Joe Tom Junior passing away.

Today's headlines about public schools having to possible cut JV sports is downright sad.

So...here's a nice cartoon to bring out a smile. It's a nice little break from the serious subjects at hand.

I hope you enjoyed it.

Makani Duhaylonsod from OC16 to UH!

You never know who you'll run into at a restaurant in Mililani.

But I'm glad that I went to Chili's last night. Besides getting a great burger. I got a big of great news on the side. (Get it? Cheesy play on the food theme. Wait cheesy is another tie in...smile.)

According to a family member of Makani Duhaylonsod - Makani is headed to the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Evidently the all-star pitcher really wants to try and win at the D1 level.

This will be fun to watch because for year's viewers of OC16 Sports were treated to seeing this tremendous young lady pitch for the Trojans. Her four years of dominance flew by like her fastball to batters.

All the Hawaii schools wanted this talented four-year starter for Mililani. My source was also part of a strong push from Chaminade to get her to be a Silversword. But the D1 status and great success of Bob Coolen's squad sealed the decision on where to play next.

Here's wishing the best to Makani, her family and friends, as they all go on to a new ballgame.

P.S. To my "source" - awesome job! Food and conversation. :)

40 is the new 30!

I'm like most of you.

Work a full day, try to eat decently but don't always succeed, keep up relationships with friends and family, and remain active.

But it seems to get harder and harder to fit all of that in a single day. Especially getting to the gym to workout. Some days or nights I really have to drag my butt to 24Hour Fitness or Hawaii Athletic Club. Then after what I feel is a decent regimen of running and lifting - I'm spent, done, pau, feed me, sleepy time.

Age is catching up evidently as I approach the tale end of 30-something life.

Or is it?

Watching the olympic trials, Dana Torres is cause to rethink years on a person.

Torres is 41-years old. Comes out of retirement for a second time and is "the" top female swimmer of the US team! Oh yeah, she had a baby too.

Age and becoming mommy have done nothing to slow her down! Sunday she won her second event of the trials with another American record in the 50-meter freestyle.

Overall she'll likely drop out of the 100-meter swim to concentrate on the 50 and a couple of relays too. This is her one concession to her very still-buff body.

But considering everything she's shown here as she makes her fifth olympic team. Yeah that's over 20-years of olympic caliber action, not to mention, she's been an olympic swimmer longer than some of her competition has been alive!

So Dana Torres, you're my idol.

I only hope I can enter the next age bracket in as good shape as you - ok, ok, I know that's not gonna happen - but I can shoot for a bit of your buffness.
